Weekly Photo Challenge – Geometry

Look around you – geometry is everywhere. Be it a dandelion in a grassy field or something seemingly chaotic as a fractal, every structure can be broken down to its physical aspects of shape, size, angles, and how it interacts with the space around it.  This week’s theme is essentially an open window of opportunity, where virtually any submission and its geometric facets can be explored.

I always find geometry synonymous with all things constructive and creative; symmetry, however, is a whole different ball-game. Starting from the grand design of the universe to the tiniest pulsar, everything has been carefully crafted and intelligently designed. The same can be said for man-made structures, architectures that demand respect. Here is one such example. Even though the featured image is of a sky-light at Dubai Festival City (I love how the light plays off the shiny surface), the other geometric marvels are featured as a gallery below. Hope you enjoy them.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Big

Standing Tall: The Burj Khalifa

I know this entry is a bit last-minute but honestly, I was torn between taking a literal translation and a more conceptual one to this week’s larger-than-life theme ‘Big. Since I had a few great shots of the world’s tallest building lying around in my old photo collection, I thought of taking a more literal route.

These images were taken back in 2009, just a few months before the official opening of the building; back then, it was called Burj Dubai. Enjoy!

In Perspective: A Glimpse Into Persia

Persian Dreams

This photo was taken at Ibn Batutta Mall, Dubai, UAE and is one of my favorite shots ever. I love seeing things in a different perspective and the results are pretty interesting most of the time. Enjoy!

Fun With Lightroom’s HSL and Split Toning Features

Original Image

I have been using Adobe Lightroom for over a year now and the software never ceases to amaze me. At times, I just find myself opening random images to see how tweaking various settings affects my photo. HSL (short for Hue, Saturation and Luminosity) and Split Toning are perhaps my two most favorite tools and you will shortly see why.

In layman’s terms, think of HSL and Split Toning as something you do to recolor your images, increase the strength of some colors, and desaturate others. All I can say is that these features are a lot of fun. I don’t want to bore you with all the technical mumbo-jumbo, so even if you are an amateur wishing to digitally enhance your photos, Adobe Lightroom is the software to have. The learning curve is pretty steep (please take the literal meaning of this phrase i.e. easy to learn) so you should be up and running as soon as you install it.

Without further ado, here are a few examples. Hope they please your eyes. Enjoy!

Decreased saturation on yellow-green-orange components

Split-toning for a more dramatic effect

Desaturating everything but Aqua

Note: The image was taken at Wafi Mall, Dubai, UAE using a mere Sony Cybershot DSC-W130, which, by the way, is a great camera for beginners.

Aerobatics at Dubai Airshow

I happened to attend the Dubai Airshow back in 2009 and boy was it fun! Rummaging through my old photo collection, I came across these two shots that I absolutely loved, so I thought I’d share them with you. Enjoy!

Zoomin’ Ahead
